Trans-Catalina Trail

8/22/2020 | 47.9 miles | 7,072′ gain | 1,700′ max elevation

Timeline:

Day 0: 1.3 miles

Began by taking the ferry from San Pedro to Avalon, departing around 3:30 pm and arriving around 4:40 pm. Plenty of stores, restaurants, and hordes of tourists in Avalon. After hopping off the ferry, we began walking the 1.3 miles to Hermit Gulch to camp (after stopping for a few margaritas). Spent the first night at Hermit Gulch – lots of families and tourists, I would skip this one again and hike directly to Blackjack to camp in the future. Lots of small island foxes and deer running around.

Day 1: 19.4 miles

Woke up at 6am Saturday, and it as already 80+ degrees and smokey from the wildfires on the mainland. We arrived in Blackjack (campground #2 on the TCT, approx. 10.2 miles) around 11 am, refilled water, and continued the next 2 miles to the Airport in the Sky. By this point, it was extremely hot, so we spent an hour or two relaxing and having a burger. Began hiking to our campsite at Little Harbor around 2pm, which was approx. 6 miles from the airport. Arrived around 4 pm to hang out with a buffalo by the ocean. This would be a great spot for group camping, the spots are massive, shaded with palm trees, and right on the ocean.

Day 2: 20.5 miles
